I have been thinking about gifts for the holidays this year, yes its early but I like to get my shopping done early so I can focus on all the other fun things about the holidays.
Every year it seems there are more people to buy for on my list and it can get overwhelming just thinking about it and trying to find them the perfect gift…not to mention the cost of buying for so many people.
So this year my goal is to give more homemade and CHEAP gifts to cut down on cost but here’s the thing I have tried the whole D.I.Y gift giving before and it becomes to much to handle trying to make cool gifts that people will actually like. Its a lot of work and can actually cost just as much or more to make handmade gifts!
I remember one year I made my Nephews each homemade beanbag style chairs, thinking that it would be a cheap fun gift to give. well they did love them thankfully BUT even with using fabric I already had the cost of the filling for two beanbag chairs was more than just buying them a premade gift.
My goal this year is to make D.I.Y gifts that are cheap and quick to make that will still be awesome.
Here are 5 that I plan on making this holiday season:
5 easy cheap D.I.Y gifts
D.I.Y lip scrub I made this scrub and tried it out a few months ago and I am in love with it! super fast and easy to make. .
T-shirt scarf this infinity scarf using a t-shirt looks super easy and cute. I can’t wait to try it out!
3 minute fudge 3 minute fudge with just 3 ingredients…umm yes that sounds like the perfect D.I.Y gift to me!
Microwavable heat pads these are great for all kinds of aches and pains or when its winter and your cold. I am going to make these with the peace and calming essential oil I think it is made by young living.
If you wanted to really make an awesome gift for someone special I think all 5 of these things wrapped up together like a little spa like set would be amazing…I mean I would love it if someone gave me this!
disclaimer: I was not asked to review this product by Jet.com or given any discounts or free products for my opinion. I paid for this kit and purchased it because I really thought it looked good.
I ordered some of my favorite turmeric ginger tea and Fenugreek seed tea from Jet.com (one of the only places I can find these teas that ships quickly) a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that they now have beauty kits available, a men’s grooming kit it is $35, a fit beauty kit it is $42 and the lux clean beauty kit which is the cheapest (I was shocked that it was the cheapest but yay!) at $28.
Since I have been trying to use more natural products lately, the clean beauty kit caught my eye right away. The products all come in a plain canvas drawstring bag but inside that is a cute little zipper bag, I am thinking I will use it as a on the go makeup bag or something once I use up all of the products.
what comes in the bag?
Little Barn Apothecary Charcoal + Aloe face cleanser
MUN Argan oil
S.W Basics cleanser
S.W Basics Toner
Rituals the ritual of Ayurveda natural dry body oil
So is it worth it?
The clean beauty kit costs $28 which means its about $5.60 per product not to bad, considering all of the full size versions of these products on Jet are pretty expensive. The Argan oil is the most expensive at $70 for a 6.76oz bottle and the rest of the products range between $15 and $30 each.
I tried the Little Barn Apothecary Charcoal + Aloe face cleanser before I went to bed, I used about 1 1/2 pumps but really 1 was plenty. It has a almost licorice like scent to me, maybe that’s not it but that’s what it reminded me of for some reason.
I love this cleanser so much! my face feels so soft and for a lack of a better word clean after using it. I really like that my skin doesn’t feel tight and dry like it usually does after using a regular drugstore cleanser.
The next day I decided it was time to give the S.W. Basics cleanser and the S.W. Basics Toner a try. Both the cleanser and the toner had to be applied with cotton balls, so after a quick hunt for the cotton balls I was ready to give it a try.
I do think both of these products are good that being said, I get that they are supposed to be simple ( the cleanser only has 3 ingredients and the toner only has 5 ingredients) but they felt simple if that makes sense. The toner smells SO much of apple cider vinegar that I really had trouble applying it all over my face and the smell lingered for awhile.
On the positive side these are both very gentle products and my face did feel clean after using them so I think they could be a good option for a lot of people. For me though I just hate the smell of apple cider vinegar especially when its on my face!
I kind of feel like maybe a D.I.Y face cleaner and toner could have done just as well as these products and would be a lot cheaper than actually buying the full size version of these.
I used the Argan oil in my hair because I have read that its really good for frizzy hair. but its also really great for your skin and that’s actually what the bottle suggests using it for.
This may be something I need to use for awhile to see all the benefits because I really didn’t notice much difference however I do plan to continue to use this after I wash my hair to add more moisture back to my frizzy curly hair and after I finish straightening my hair.
Personally I wouldn’t pay the $70 dollars for the full size bottle, I am sure it would last for awhile but I just cant see paying that much. I will probably try something much cheaper that has argan oil in it after I finish using this oil. I would love any suggestions on a great product for frizzy curly hair.
Lastly I tried the tiny bottle of Rituals the ritual of Ayurveda natural dry body oil. I am going to start off by saying I had only recently heard of dry oil so I wasn’t really sure what to expect or if I would like it. But o my let me tell you this oil is everything! it doesn’t take very much at all which is good considering how small that bottle is haha.
I use it on my face after using the charcoal +aloe face cleanser everyday now. The dry oil really doesn’t leave my face feeling or looking oily at all, just a tiny bit of a glow which I love. The Scent of this oil is SO good I’m telling you it smells like some kind of yummy dessert or something.
Final thoughts on this kit
so honestly for me the charcoal + aloe cleanser and the dry oil made this clean beauty kit totally worth it. Because otherwise I probably would have never tried either one of these products and they are now something I am going to continue to use.
I will finish using all of the other products as well because none of them where really bad or made my skin breakout. these are just my 2 favorites by far.
These products helped me realize how much I need to take better care of my skin. I always put my skin as a last priority to everything else and its really important that we take care of ourselves. I can already tell a difference in the way my skin feels and looks after just about a week of using these clean beauty products.
Are there any other clean beauty products that are amazing? I would love to hear about them.
I am so excited! I finally bought me some Braid rings, I saw these on Pinterest months ago and I thought they where so cool looking. I thought about ordering some so many times but for some reason I never did.
Actually I know exactly why I didn’t, I have a really hard time spending money on myself even a small amount. But like a lot of moms I have talked to if I am buying something for my kids then it doesn’t bother me but I feel selfish and wasteful when I spend on myself. I am trying to change that though because I deserve to treat myself too!
So last week I was looking through my hair board and decided it was time to try them out! I found a assorted pack of 20 silver rings on EBay they also had rose gold ones (I may try those next) for less than $4 with free shipping which seemed pretty reasonable to me.
I got them in the mail on Saturday and since I had decided to wear my hair curly I went ahead and braided a small section of my hair then added the small size braid rings to my finished braid. it was so easy all I had to do was twist them open and positon them where I wanted in my braid then twist them shut.
I really had fun wearing these and got lots of compliments on them, I also tried them today with my hair straightened and the larger size rings.
I loved this look just as much. Sometimes its just really fun to try something different even if its something as simple and small as a few Braid rings. Have you or would you ever wear braid rings? Any tips on different styles to try?
I always see all these DIY beauty treatments on Pinterest and I wonder how well they actually work. I usually stop short of actually trying them because one time I decided to try a DIY hair mask that was supposed to make my hair all soft and wonderful.
The problem? well it had oatmeal in it and trying to get oatmeal out of your hair is almost impossible it became gooey and “snot like” and I had to wash my hair over and over and comb it over and over to get it all out, it was a nightmare. did my hair feel softer? nope after washing it that much it was fuzzy and dry.
So no oatmeal for me today! but I picked 3 simple treatments to try out, first up I tried Kiss me sugar lip scrub. the recipe did say to use almond oil which I didn’t have but I saw in the comments that some people where using olive oil so that’s what I used along with the optional dash of cayenne pepper ( seriously don’t go over board with this ingredient.)
this is what it looked like after mixing it all up:
I massaged this into my lips for about a minute and then washed it off and let me tell you this stuff worked! my lips felt amazing and very soft, its been several hours and my lips still feel just as good!
I think I may just make some of this scrub up for Christmas this year and put it in cute little containers as stocking stuffers.
On to my next DIY treatment: Nose pore strip. now I have been wanting to find a good nose pore strip for awhile DIY or store bought ( If you know of a great one let me know in the comments below), so when I found this I thought it was worth a try.
All you do is put egg whites all over your nose and then stick a strip of paper towel to your nose for 10 minutes, simple right?
It looked crazy and honestly I found slathering my nose with egg whites a bit gross so I already wasn’t loving it and then after 10 minutes I removed the paper towel and yeah it was a fail! I didn’t notice any benefits of this one unfortunately.
After that fail it was on to my last treatment Coffee face mask another really easy one which I just had to mix coffee powder and honey together, I didn’t have any powder so I just used regular coffee that I had.
It smelled really good…well if you like the smell of strong coffee that is. I massaged it all over my face and then left it on for the 20 minutes like the directions said. I looked really cute this time haha.
This is one to try right before a shower because it is messy, I got it in my hair and had to take a shower. when I first washed it off I thought my skin looked okay not like omg good but it did look a bit better.
But when I got out of the shower I notice my face felt weird and slightly itchy, I looked in the mirror and saw my face had red patches on it…umm that’s not what you want.
I don’t know if it was some kind of allergic reaction or what it did disappear pretty quickly and now my face looks totally fine, fortunately and actually feels pretty soft and looks better I think but this one is not for me given the allergic reaction or whatever it was.
What are some other great DIY beauty treatments? I would love to hear what you have tried and what has worked or failed.
